The Market as a House of Cards
Nahh - in the long-term the fed destroys any gains by devaluing the dollar.

Take your paycheck and spend it. It helps the economy, and saving means you just give the crooks a means to steal it. If you buy 'stuff' with your money then all you need is a gun to protect it.

Spend spend spend -- and maybe the government will have a bailout for you !!!

Thanks Bill -- I hope you keep your views on the crooked markets front and center, even in 'good' (aka government and wall st. contrived ) times.

The whole thing really makes me sick.

Is the Dollar Rallying on Realigned Expectations?
As much as I hate to admit it -- cuz im way against the creative abandon the fed and sec-treas have used to abate this credit/confidence issue -- I think Paulson may have restored some confidence in the bucko. I hear those TV personalities saying the dollar is coming down cuz oil is coming down... errumm... whatever ! If our monetary life is predicated on sentiment to a rectangular piece of paper then methinks our (and their) confidence in our dollar is factor # 1 - I cant reconcile the huge fiscal deficit we are carrying with a strong dollar though

I have to take issue with your conclusion that $120 oil is acceptable - I dont think it is. The current 'shock' has yet to completely seep through to the consumer -- and we have heard quite a few companies talking about using the pricing power they have to jack up prices. Of course they are already engaged in the American past-time of just putting less content in each unit and saving costs on the margin.

In any case I think oil needs to be closer to $100, and /should/ be $85, tops at this point -- I guess Ill settle for $100 -- but $120 is still too high by far.

      Take care.

      Historic Financial Collapse Underway?
I always find it hard to believe in extreme scenarios. The truth almost always ends up being somewhere in the middle.

That said, I think the number of perps...err... goldman sachs...err.. governemtn officials they are trotting out to tell us that we worry too much is another 'tell' that things are worse than normal.

It all hinges on housing. What breaks the downward spiral ? Its a degenerative feedback loop, and what breaks it -- especially as the government offshores our jobs and devalues our dollar so there will be fewer and fewer solvent families and individuals to sop up the excess inventory and stabilize prices ?

      What breaks the cycle ?

Nahhh I want a mortgage guarantee outfit, where I can use $50 as collateral (we wont say anything about the good faith of our co-conspirators) and guarantee everyones mortgage... for a small fee, of course !

If you know the right people you'll get the support of the whole population !

I contend that in the year where crooks like gs and the NYSE can operate opaquely, where the financial institutions can make up their own rules as they go along and create vehicles that could destroy the financial system, retirement savings, and well-being of a whole country or world, where the treasury secretary (aka GS) can openly buy shares to prop up failed businesses with /the small investors' dollar/, that there is no place to hide.

The manipulators kill you in the short run -- the dollar inflators and government liars kill you in the long run.

Small investors dont know about hedge funds because they are not allowed to benefit from them.

I want a system where uncle sam bears my risk, and I get the profits.

Yeah its gotta be Iran manipulating - surely the US crooks refuse to let that bad bad nation ruin our country by driving oil prices up -- Im sure the US traders trade against those bad people to keep oil down because they are worried what high prices will do to our country.

      Gimme a break.

We know the enemy -- the enemy is us.

Oh by the way - the other major complaint of people trying to emulate your portfolios was that all of the moves on the spreadsheets were /not/ published at all.

Hey dont get me wrong - maybe since then you have put mechanisms into place for people to track your moves in real time (how do you actively buy and sell options on 40 or 50 positions in real time and keep it straight anyway?). Maybe now they can emulate your moves and everyone is making 300% per month !! woohoo !!

No wonder the market is tanking - Phils stock world is winning all the trades !

Please Phil... ur a smart guy - but get real.

Phil - Yeah ok - but whether GS are a buncha thieving manipulators who dont know the industry is moot when you consider that their clueless call was what brought BA to its knees. In that case its not truth that matters, its a jittery investor who listens to the market 'master' (manipulator). The bottom line is that it wasnt the tanker contract that dropped em from 80 to 65.

Geez dude at this rate you should be running the world by now.

I know.. ur doing it for the people... cuz you care.

Phil Ive always liked your writing style, but never found you credible due to your claims of outsized gains in your trading portfolios. In many cases your market calls are on the mark, but NOT when you start involving your political agenda.

Oh - and Boeing didnt tumble due to the tanker deal loss -- they tumbled due to GS saying they could lose 30% of their aircraft orders due to the economic downturn.

The Screws Tighten on Apple Investors
      AAPL's not overhyped ??

      *LOL* now thats funny !

AAPL products have always been overhyped -- they have also always been overpriced -- which means that they wont achieve the kind of penetration the aapl zealots contend.

Regardless of stock price, AAPL is completely overhyped -- and given that nobody /needs/ any of the stuff they sell I dont see how anyone (other than an aapl zealot, of which there are many) could even think aapl stock would thrive in an extended economic downturn.

Shoot tech in general has gotten /killed/ because tech spending, even at the corporate level is considered fairly discretionary by wall street -- yet a consumer tech company is gonna buck all that and go up while the market tanks ?

Ok im gonna sell all my PG and buy AAPL to protect me from the bear !

Time To Start Buying Some Dogs?
Funny - thinking about the purity of the 'Dogs' equation, you have to think that information and nuance werent anywhere near as available when the strategy was hatched -- Id think pre-judging your picks to at least an extent would be warranted. Call the old strategy 'Dogs for Dummies' , call the new strategy 'New Dogs'.

      Gotta change with the times...

Oh - and whats all the venom goin on here ? I find most articles here quite interesting reading, regardless of typos. My God some of you need to disengage your hate and engage your higher thought processes.

Maybe learning how to hedge, and switching to decaf might help too !
